"Let's Imagine..." Convening, The Border

A well-respected San Diego philanthropist commented that San Diego and Northern Baja California are part of the same "mega-region," facing common challenges related to water, electricity, and pollution. He asserts the border fence between San Diego and Tijuana hurts the local culture and economy; he would like it dismantled within the next 25 years.

Are San Diego and Baja California part of a common region, or are they separate? Would it be feasible and prudent to dismantle the border fence? Why or why not?

  1. Tearing down the border fence is a nice, well-intentioned idea. Certainly, our neighbors down in Tijuana must think San Diego is a huge snooty gated community full of insensitive rich people. While that's not who we are, putting up a barrier between us and our neighbors must make it seem that way.

On the other hand, there is a reason the wall is there. Economic migrants from Mexico and other parts of the world have strong incentive to come to the US for better lives. As long as poverty exists on our borders (and it probably always will), there will be a need for the wall.

Even if San Diegans wanted the wall to come down, that's a federal matter, isn't it? If it were what we wanted, I don't see how we would realistically go about making it happen (especially considering that the Red states, far from the border, are deathly afraid of illegal immigration).
