The panel of American Planning Association experts recommended the Vision for San Diego plan on a 40 year time horizon, to correspond with the 2050 Climate Change Report and other efforts. A local consultant disagreed, saying the Vision should plan for 50 to 100 years in the future.
What is the appropriate time horizon for the Vision, and why?

SANDAG is making a 30 year plan for the region. It doesn't seem like much of a value added undertaking if the Vision plans for 10 years more than they do. Also, I wouldn't say that it is necessary to have perfect forecasts to plan for what we imagine for the future; in that sense, we don't need to line up our time horizon with other planning efforts. In that sense, I agree with Peter MacCracken, who thought it should be longer. 100 years out is hard to fathom, since that won't even be in my children's lifetimes. I think planning for 75 years into the future is far enough out to be visionary and distinct, while not so far as to be completely ethereal.
